Seasoned Indian-American Cardiologist Bindukumar C. Kansupada, highlighted the the transformative impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership on India and commended the leader for reviving national pride.
According to Kansupada, the significant improvement in the country’s education, standard of living, tourism and other sectors has elevated the sense of pride in Indians.
“When I went to med school, there were only four medical schools in Mumbai. Now in India, we have more than 700 medical schools. Every district has a medical school. There were only five IITs, if I recall, in 1970 in India. Now we have, I believe 23 IITs,” the Philadelphia-based doctor who was attending the Desis Decide event said.
“Growth is enormous. Confidence level is enormous among Indian youth. Tourism, what you call Tirth (religious) tourism has developed. There are more airports than ever I have seen in India. The happiness index is improving. People are more self-sufficient and I think people are proud to be Indians,” he added.
Kansupada, who is the vice chairman of the Wheels Global Foundation’s Health Council, believes that as India’s growth story continues, the younger generation of Indian Americans will visit India for professional and career advancement, as opposed to many first-generation Indian Americans who had to relocate abroad.
Commenting on Modi’s chances of winning a third-term, the Indian American said that the underprivileged section and middle class holds a strong affinity for the BJP, appreciating initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Yojana and educational opportunities. According to him, Modi is likely to win a third-term however it may not be with the large majority that polls are indicating, due to fewer voter turnout this year.
Hailing Modi as a global leader, Kansupada said, "I urge Modi to embrace the concept of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family) to foster global unity.” He emphasized that Modi's leadership, which is not self-centered, has brought pride not only to Indians but also the diaspora around the globe.
Mental Health and its importance in maintaining physical health
In the interview, the physician also elaborated on the significance of mental health and its impact on the body. He highlighted stress, anxiety, and uncertainty as prevalent issues contributing to heart attacks, particularly affecting the youth through job insecurity and lack of sleep.
On the prevalence of heart disease in Indian American and South Asian patients, Kansupada pointed out that alcohol consumption coupled with hypertension and diabetes, are the manor causes. In recent times, he raised concerns about the rising use of drugs such as fentanyl and xylazine.
To improve and mental health, Kansupada advocated integrating mindfulness and yoga into daily routines, highlighting their benefits in reducing stress and improving overall well-being.
He also praised the government's efforts in promoting mental health awareness, including the 988 suicide prevention hotline, and urged individuals to use applications like "Yoga of Immortals" to enhance health and self-acceptance.
