Minnesota Governor appoints Dasharatha Yata to State Council on Inclusion and Equity
In his new capacity, Dr. Yata will advise on equitable practices, addressing disparities and systemic racism in Minnesota communities.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced the appointment of Indian American Dr. Dasharatha Yata to the Governor's Community Council on Inclusion and Equity.
The Plymouth resident will serve as a member of the council effective June 2024, with his term expiring on April 4, 2027. He replaces Ravyn Gibbs on the council.
Currently the executive co-director of SEWA-AIFW, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the well-being of vulnerable South Asian-Indian families in Minnesota, Yata has experience in leading civic engagement initiatives addressing equality, diversity, and racism.
Since its founding in 2004, SEWA-AIFW has provided comprehensive support including crisis intervention, outreach services, research, and volunteer training. The organization's wellness programs feature a 24-hour crisis line, legal and housing assistance, women's empowerment initiatives, and health clinics offering screenings and education.
A health first aid certificate holder, Yata has also led several mental health initiatives, including the SEWA Health Initiative programs focusing on mental health and suicide prevention. His commitment to community service has earned him numerous awards.
In response to his appointment, Yata, who moved to the U.S. from Telangana, India, in 2011, said, “I am humbled to be chosen for this appointment to serve all Minnesotans, especially my community. I intend to engage deeply and listen actively to ensure equitable practices across the state.”
Yata’s new role on the council will involve advising and collaborating with the One Minnesota Council and the Governor's Office of Equity, Opportunity, and Accessibility to address disparities and systemic racism in Minnesota communities.
