The 2024 Cognizant Major League Cricket (MLC) season kicked off with thrilling matches on July 5 as season one winner MI New York and Los Angeles Knight Riders secured victories in their respective openers.

At Church Street Park, MI New York began their tournament with a commanding six-wicket win over the Seattle Orcas. The Orcas were restricted to a modest 108 runs, thanks to impressive bowling from Rashid Khan and Trent Boult, who each took three wickets. Boult struck early, dismissing Nauman Anwar for a duck and removing Quinton de Kock soon after. Shubham Ranjane top-scored for the Orcas with 35 runs.

Nicholas Pooran's unbeaten 62 off 37 balls powered MI New York's chase, leading them to victory in just 14.2 overs. Despite losing early wickets, Pooran's aggressive batting, including multiple sixes and fours, shifted the momentum. Kieron Pollard contributed with a steady 8*, ensuring MI New York reached the target comfortably.

In the second match of the season in Dallas, the Los Angeles Knight Riders claimed a 12-run victory over the Texas Super Kings at Grand Prairie Stadium. Unmukt Chand's brilliant 68 off 45 balls anchored the Knight Riders' innings, setting a total of 162/7. Despite early setbacks, Chand's resilience and Corne Dry's late surge helped the team post a competitive score.

The Texas Super Kings' chase began cautiously. Captain Faf du Plessis was dismissed for 14, followed by Aaron Hardie for 11. Opener Devon Conway kept the Super Kings in contention with a solid 53, but Ali Khan's pivotal 14th over changed the game. Khan took three crucial wickets, reducing the Super Kings from 100/2 to 107/6. Despite Calvin Savage's late effort, the Super Kings fell short, finishing at 150/8.
