The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has named Indian-American academician Manu Gupta as the dean of the graduate school and vice provost, effective immediately. Previously, he served as the interim dean for two years.
Gupta, who joined VCU in 2008 as a professor in the School of Business, expressed enthusiasm about his new role, highlighting the university’s strengths in research and creativity. “I’m excited for this opportunity as I believe that VCU is well-positioned in the changing landscape of higher education,” he said.
“As dean of the Graduate School, I will promote a culture that values creativity and innovation, builds strong relationships between graduate students and faculty members, celebrates diversity and ensures that graduate students have the resources they need to succeed,” he added.
Throughout his tenure as interim dean, Gupta led several key initiatives, including the development of a strategic plan for graduate enrollment and the creation of a tuition plan aimed at attracting out-of-state and international students.
His leadership earned high praise from university leaders. Fotis Sotiropoulos, VCU’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, commended Gupta for his collaborative leadership and commitment to student success.
“Professor Gupta has demonstrated himself to be a strong, collaborative leader with a clear vision to advance graduate education at VCU by growing enrollments, expanding diversity and strengthening the excellence and impact of our graduate programs,” said Sotiropoulos.
Before joining VCU, Gupta taught finance at the University of Missouri and Southern Illinois University. At VCU, he earned tenure, became a professor, and served as chair of the Department of Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate.
Gupta holds a bachelor’s degree from S.V. National Institute of Technology in Surat, India, a master’s from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School.
