Maldives’ President Mohamed Muizzu addressed the pressing issue of the Maldives’ debt to India during an interview with Miharu. He expressed his hope for debt relief measures. President Muizzu, who assumed office on Nov. 17, 2023, addressed the significant loans inherited from consecutive governments, stressing the necessity for leniency in repayment structures to avoid adverse effects on bilateral relations.

According to President Muizzu, Maldives is burdened with hefty loans from India, surpassing its economic capacity to bear. He emphasized ongoing discussions with the Indian government to explore viable repayment options. Despite the economic strain, Muizzu reiterated the importance of maintaining cordial relations with India.

In the interview translated by Ahmed Hamdhoon, Miuzzu stated, “The conditions we have inherited are such that there are very large loans taken from India. Hence, we are holding discussions to explore leniencies in the repayment structure of these loans. Instead of halting any ongoing projects, to proceed with them at speed. So I see no reason for any adverse effects [on Maldives-India relations].”

In addition, he expressed gratitude for India’s aid and contributions to Maldives’ development, he stated the intention to speed up ongoing projects rather than halting them.

During the interview, President Muizzu proposed the establishment of a high-level committee for swift decision-making, particularly regarding infrastructure projects like the bridge and Hanimaadhoo Airport. He also touched upon certain issues, such as the presence of Indian military personnel.

He highlighted the complexity of balancing economic cooperation with strategic interests, particularly regarding foreign military presence. But nonetheless, Muizzu remained optimistic, stating, “Everything can be achieved through discussions and deliberations. That’s what I believe.”

He clarified that the Maldives’ management of its economic zone did not signify a distancing from India, and that Maldives would remain an ally of India.
