A sophomore student of Indian descent at the University of California, Berkeley, has enlisted to represent the South Asian community in the student government. Maitri Halappa, announced she was running for  Associated students of the University of California ( ASUC) Senator for the 2024-2025 academic year in March.

The key issues she will focus on once elected are to improve wellness, inclusivity and belonging; further sexual violence and sexual harassment (SVSH) prevention and education; and emphasize sustainability and climate literacy, as per her campaign announcement on LinkedIn. “My heritage has been a vital part of my identity, and I am so excited to represent such an amazing and diverse community of people,” Halappa said in the post.

Her prior work experience as chief of staff in the office of ASUC Senator Caitlyn Guntle as well as the executive director of SVSH prevention in the office of the executive vice president were instrumental in helping her decide to run for ASUC Senator. Halappa said these served as “invaluable experiences that have shown just how much positive change the ASUC* can make, and I promise to continue that work as your Senator.”

Halappa is running independently with an endorsement from the South Asian Caucus. She hopes to harness her fundraising and ASUC experience to increase representation and funding for UCB’s South Asian and dance communities. “I have a lot of experience with that, being chief of staff for Berkeley’s dance community office,” Halappa told The Daily Cal, a student-run newspaper. “I’m working with dancers every single day with their needs and concerns regarding spaces for practice and events.”

Presently, Halappa is the associate vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the Haas Business School Association (HBSA) at UC Berkeley since Dec. 2023. She is also an intern at the ASUC student union and the HBSA. Halappa is a campaign intern for Daniel Lurie who is running for mayor in San Francisco.

Halappa also participated in the Teen Miss India CA 2022 competition and won the title as well as the Miss Worldwide Popular award at the event.
