London is set to host its annual Vaisakhi celebrations in Trafalgar Square on Saturday, April 6, bringing together communities to commemorate the Sikh festival.

Vaisakhi, observed as the most important festival in the Sikh calendar, will showcase a rich display of Sikh and Punjabi traditions, heritage, and the birth of the Khalsa, symbolizing modern-day Sikhism.

The event, running from noon to 6 pm local time, will feature DJ and presenter Tommy Sandhu and entrepreneur Shani Dhanda as hosts, known for their contributions to cultural events and advocacy.

According to an official statement, attendees can expect cultural performances, including Kirtan by Grewal Twins and Kirpal Singh Panesar, as well as demonstrations of Gatka, a traditional Sikh martial art, with participation from The Dhol Academy drummers.

Activities will also include talks by expert chefs, turban-tying demonstrations, film screenings, and sports such as the Sikh Games. Sikh artists will showcase their work, adding to the cultural experience.

For families, a dedicated children’s marquee will offer free activities provided by Kiddie Sangat. Additionally, complimentary vegetarian treats and traditional Indian tea will be available, embracing the spirit of Langar, where free meals are served to all attendees.

The event, organized by the Mayor of London and supported by the Vaisakhi Community Advisory Group, holds special significance this year as it marks the 40th anniversary of the 1984 genocide in India, prompting reflection on Sikh heritage and history.

Vaisakhi, recognized globally as a spring harvest festival and the commemoration of the formation of the Khalsa panth under Guru Gobind Singh in 1699, holds deep significance for Sikhs worldwide. While Punjab remains central to Baisakhi celebrations, the United Kingdom, with its vibrant Sikh community, invites everyone to join in the festivities.
