Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an underwater metro line in Kolkata on March 6. Notably, this project will be India’s first attempt at having an operational underwater railway line.

The Prime Minister also travelled on the newly inaugurated Esplanade-Howrah Maidan route, accompanied by both the project's laborers and school children.

“The metro journey was made memorable thanks to the company of these youngsters and those who worked on this project. We also traveled through the tunnel under the Hooghly river,” Modi said in a post on X.

“It’s a very special day for the people of Kolkata as the city’s metro network gets significantly enhanced. Connectivity will get a boost and traffic will get decongested. It’s a proud moment that the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro section has the first underwater metro transportation tunnel under any major river in our country,” he said in another post.

The train route built under the city's Hoogly river also holds the title of India's deepest metro station, at 33 meters below the surface. It features six stations, three of which are situated underground.

The metro covers a 520-meter stretch in a mere 45 seconds. It will connect Howrah Maidan to Esplanade, forming an integral part of the East-West Metro corridor.

Additionally, through video conferencing, Modi inaugurated several other projects across the country, including the Pune Metro, Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension, Agra Metro, and the Duhai-Modinagar section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor, underscoring the government's commitment to transforming urban transportation.
