King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer, the Buckingham Palace said in a statement on February 5.

The King was at the hospital for a procedure for benign prostate enlargement when his medical team noticed a separate issue of concern. Subsequent diagnostic tests identified a form of cancer, the statement said without revealing the exact form of cancer.

The King has begun receiving treatment for his condition. “His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the statement said.

British PM Rishi Sunak wishes King Charles III a speedy recovery

Rishi Sunak issued a tweet shortly after Buckingham Palace released the statement about the King’s health. “Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well,” Sunak wrote.

In October 2022, King Charles III appointed Rishi Sunak as leader of the U.K. Parliament following his victory as the leader of the Conservative Party, unopposed. Sunak’s appointment was the King’s first time asking a new Prime Minister to form a government after acceding to the throne at the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022.

Sunak had met with the King’s two private secretaries – Clive Alderson and Edward Young, and Charles’s equerry Lt. Col. Jonny Thompson at Buckingham Palace’s Room 1844. Known to be the most important room in the palace, it is the venue for most meetings between the Royal Family and their distinguished guests.
