On the occasion of the 10th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June.21, King County, Pierce County, the City of Seattle, and the City of Bellevue issued official proclamations. These proclamations endorsed this year's IDY theme, "Yoga for Self and Society," and celebrated the importance of yoga in promoting health and well-being.

This significant event follows the recent opening of the Consulate General of India in Seattle in December 2023. The initiative aligns with global efforts to recognize and celebrate the ancient practice of yoga and the proclamations serve to acknowledge yoga's deep-rooted history and its continued relevance in today's world.

Key points from the proclamations:

  • Historical Roots: Yoga, first mentioned in the Rig Veda, is an ancient practice originating in India more than 5,000 years ago. It has been recognized for its significant contributions to physical and mental well-being.
  • Health Benefits: Yoga promotes healthier choices and lifestyle patterns that foster holistic health and well-being.
  • Global Recognition: The United Nations General Assembly, co-sponsored by 177 member countries, unanimously adopted June.21, the Summer Solstice, as the International Day of Yoga in 2014.
  • Cultural Contributions: The Indian diaspora in Washington State, particularly in King County, has significantly grown, enhancing cultural exchange and diversity in the region.
  • Diplomatic Relations: The newly-established Consulate General of India in Seattle plays a crucial role in strengthening partnerships and collaboration between India and the United States.

The Consulate General of India in Seattle hosted the IDY celebrations, marking a major event for the local Indian community and yoga enthusiasts. This celebration aligns with similar events organized by the Consulate General of India in Houston, New York, and various Indian embassies worldwide.

The official proclamations bring out the importance of yoga in fostering health, celebrating cultural heritage, and strengthening international ties.
