The Kerala Center held its 32nd annual awards dinner on Oct. 19 at Elmont, New York, honoring 8 individuals for their contributions.
The event began with national anthems by Riya Alexander, with remarks from president Alex K. Esthappan. Senator Kevin Thomas and Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages honored the awardees and were also recognized for supporting the community.
The 2024 honorees included Wesley Mathews, CEO of Choose New Jersey, recognized for excellence in Public Service; Varkey Abraham, founder of Hanover Bank U.S.A., honored for Business Leadership; Samcy Kodumon, an author and community organizer, awarded for contributions to Pravasi Malayalam Literature; Sibu Nair, deputy director of Asian Affairs for New York State, recognized for Community Service; Suja Thomas, president of the National Association of Indian Nurses of America (NAINA), honored for Nursing Leadership; Hashim Mooppan, a partner at Jones Day, awarded for Legal Services; Sunanda Nair, a renowned Mohiniattam dancer, recognized for Performing Arts; and Johnson Samuel, founder of Life and Limb, honored for his Humanitarian Service.
Entertainment for the evening featured classical and folk dances by students of Noopura Dance School, led by Chandrika Kurup. Kairali TV’s short film competition winners were honored; Oasis was awarded the Best Film award.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by secretary Raju Thomas, followed by dinner catered by Cotillion.
