Karthik Rao named CEO of Nielsen

The young Indian American has an MBA in marketing from Illinois State University as well as a B.A. and M.A. in Economics from Loyola College in Chennai, India.

Nielsen, the industry pioneer in audience measurement, data, and analytics named Karthik Rao as its new CEO with immediate effect. David Kenny, who has been the company's CEO since 2018, will take over as executive chairman.

Promoted to the post, Rao said, "Nielsen has been my home for most of my career, and I could not be more excited for this new opportunity," adding "Providing our client partners, the ad industry, and content creators of all types, the most accurate information possible is our singular goal.”

Rao has been the CEO of Nielsen's Audience Measurement business since the beginning of 2023. As such, he is in charge of leading and developing Nielsen's audience measurement amid extraordinary disruption and change. Enabling a currency across all media distribution and consumption models internationally has been his main aim.

Rao was the chief operating officer of Nielsen before being chosen as CEO of the audience measuring company. Before that, he served as the CEO of Nielsen Portfolio, overseeing the operations of Nielsen Entertainment, Nielsen Gracenote, Nielsen Brandbank, and Nielsen Telecom throughout all major international markets. 

He represents Nielsen's Asian American Employee Resource Group as an executive sponsor on the Diversity Council. Since 2019, he has been on the boards of NCSolutions and OpenSlate, two global providers of brand safety and contextual analytics for digital video content. He has an MBA in marketing from Illinois State University as well as a B.A. and M.A. in Economics from Loyola College in Chennai, India.
