MLCommons, a leading AI consortium had awarded Karthik Garimella, research candidate at New York University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, its "Rising Star" in recognition of his research focused on enhancing privacy in artificial intelligence systems.

Garimella is developing solutions to access significant privacy concerns in the digital age by using multi-party computation and homomorphic encryption to ensure that data used by AI systems remains secure and private.

“When you use an AI platform like ChatGPT or Gemini, your data, even if encrypted, is accessible by the company. This is particularly concerning for sensitive or personal information,” Garimella explains.

His research aims to close these privacy loopholes as AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life. Assistant professor Brandon Reagen expressed pride in Garimella’s achievements. “He exemplifies everything we hope for in a Tandon doctoral candidate. I predict his work will make a major impact.”

Despite his recognition, Garimella remains humble about his accomplishments. “Research is a collaborative effort. The paper that caught MLCommons’ attention includes contributions from my fellow researchers, and they all deserve credit,” he said.

Garimella, who holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in computer engineering, is currently interning at NVIDIA, a technology company renowned for its innovations in GPUs and AI, further honing his skills in this critical field.

NYU Tandon School of Engineering launched the prestigious Rising Scholars Scholarship, aimed at supporting new master’s students dedicated to urban science. Starting in Fall 2024, this scholarship will cover the tuition cost of 3 credits in the first semester for select students, helping ease the financial burden as they embark on their academic journey.

Vijay Janapa Reddi, MLCommons VP and research chair, emphasized the importance of fostering young talent by recognizing their work. “The Rising Stars program is our investment in the future. We are excited to see the innovative ideas and solutions that talented researchers like Karthik will bring to the table.”
