Indian American philanthropist, and retired gastroenterologist, Jasvant Modi, has pledged US$450,000 to establish the Bhagavan Sambhavnath Jain chair and Florida Atlantic University (FAU) .

The Bhagavan Sambhavnath Jain chair at FAU will focus on academic research and teaching about Jain principles, particularly non-violence, compassion, and environmental ethics. According  to a statement by FAU, the endowed chair aims to enhance the university’s capabilities in religious and philosophical studies, while also fostering cultural and interfaith understanding.

"I am thrilled to support Florida Atlantic University in their efforts to expand the study of Jainism," Modi said. "The Bhagavan Sambhavnath Jain Chair will serve as a vital resource for scholars and students to explore and propagate the values of Jainism, contributing to a more harmonious and sustainable world."

Modi’s latest contribution is part of the many donations he has made to various institutions in the United States as part of his vision to promote global peace and ethical living through education. Notable institutions such as the University of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have made commitments to establish Jain studies programs.

The Los Angeles-based physician has mobilized the Jain community and other philanthropic entities, collectively raising $1 million to promote Jain values and scholarship internationally. The initiatives are in collaboration with the Vardhamana Charitable Foundation, an organization founded by Modi and his wife, Meera Modi.

Born in Godhra, India, Modi completed his residency in Chicago, Illinois, and has been devoted to his profession since immigrating to the United States in 1975.
