India's External Affairs Minister (EAM), S Jaishankar, unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Tao Dan Park of Ho Chi Minh City on October 17. The Minister was in Vietnam on an official visit at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart, Bui Thanh Son.

Emphasizing the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi's principles in today's conflict-ridden world, Jaishankar highlighted how Gandhi's teachings resonate with values such as human dignity, spirituality, and environmental sustainability. Calling it an important moment, he underlined Gandhi's role as not only a political inspiration but also a motivator of diplomacy.

The EAM said, “Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most iconic figures in our contemporary world. His contributions to truth, non-violence, freedom and independence of people have been recognized by the UN by proclaiming his birthday as the International Day of Non-Violence.”

"His thoughts today are a very powerful inspiration for human dignity, societal values, spirituality, environment, sustainability, cleanliness, and many other areas… So, as we strive to harmonize contradictions, to bridge divides, Mahatma Gandhi serves not just as a political inspiration, but even as a motivator of diplomacy," he said.

The unveiling of Gandhi's statue in Ho Chi Minh City demonstrated cultural exchanges and the longstanding friendship between India and Vietnam. During his visit, Jaishankar met Vietnamese leaders and discussed their partnership.

Jaishankar co-chaired the 18th India-Vietnam Joint Commission meeting, focusing on politics, defense, trade, and education. He stressed Indo-Pacific collaboration and ASEAN centrality at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, underscoring India and Vietnam's role in a rules-based global order.
