IPL auctions ‘24 : Australian players in demand, Mitchell Starc sold for record high

The Australian World Cup-winning fast bowlers were purchased for staggering sums

The Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions on December 19 witnessed a massive response with 72 players signing IPL contracts, and the 10 teams spending a total of around US$ 27.6 million.

Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player in IPL history, surpassing his captain Pat Cummins' record established during the same auction. Kolkata Knight Riders spent a hefty US$ 2.9M to sign Starc, while Sunrises Hyderabad paid  US$ 2.4M for Cummins.

Indian pacers Umesh Yadav and Shivam Mavi were sold to Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants for US$698K and 769K, respectively. Daryl Mitchell, a New Zealand all-rounder, came close with US$1.6M Chennai Super Kings snatched him up.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) broke the bank to acquire Harshal Patel for US$1.4M. CSK went all-rounder in the second set, selecting Shardul Thakur and fan favorite Rachin Ravindra.

After a violent bidding war between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, West Indies T20 captain Rovman Powell was sold to the former for a hefty 879K. Powell was the first player to be auctioned in the IPL 2024 auction, with a starting price of 136K. 

Another bidding war erupted between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad for Australia's Travis Head. Finally, the World Cup final hero, whose starting price was US$ 240K , was sold to SRH for US$ 817K.

Shubham Dubey and Sameer Rizvi's fortunes changed overnight after they were acquired by Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings for US$ 697K  and 1.9M, respectively. M Shahrukh Khan and Kumar Kushagra also received large payouts.

However, the surprising news was that Australian batsman Steve Smith went unsold despite consistent performances. Karun Nair, and Manish Pandey also had no takers.
