The UK Home Office has brought into action its suggested policies to cut migration in 2024. As part of the commitment, they have announced that majority of international students in the UK will no longer be able to bring their family to the country aa dependants.

“From today, the majority of foreign university students cannot bring family members to the UK. In 2024, we’re already delivering for the British people,” British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak posted on X.

“We are fully committed to seeing a decisive cut in migration. From today, new overseas students will no longer be able to bring family members to the UK. Postgraduate research or government-funded scholarships students will be exempt,” the Home Office posted.

The development, will greatly affect Indians who saw a 54 percent increase in the number of sponsored study visas granted to them in 2023 compared to the previous year ending in June 2022. Data showed that 42 percent of Indian students were able to receive an extension of their visa after their studies.

The Home Office’s decision adversely affects Indian students, as there was a rising trend among Indian students opting for the Graduate Route which includes the extension policy. The trend was expected to grow further in the 2023-2024 academic year.

The development comes nearly six months after the Sunak government published changes to the Immigration Rules, impacting international students in the UK. As per the new rules international students in the UK will no longer be able to bring dependants on their student visa, unless they were enrolled in a postgraduate research program.

From July 17, 2023, international students were also barred from switching to work route visas unless they completed their course. “Immigration is too high. Today we’re taking radical action to bring it down. These steps will make sure that immigration always benefits the UK,” Sunak had posted.
