The Contra Costa County Board of Education (CCCBOE) appointed Indian-origin Ishaan Savla, a junior at Dougherty Valley High School in California, as the student board member for the 2024-25 term. Savla joins Luke Wilson, a senior at El Cerrito High School, as the newest student representative on the Board.

As a student member of the CCCBOE, Savla will engage actively in meetings, providing perspectives on student-related issues and collaborating with other board members. Both Savla and Wilson have a preferential vote, which allows them to formally express their preference on motions before the board votes, although these votes do not impact the final numerical outcome of motions.

Savla has demonstrated active involvement in local and statewide advocacy efforts, holding positions such as the Governmental Affairs and Policy Director for the Bay Area at the California Association for Student Councils. Additionally, he served as an ambassador for the San Ramon Teen Council and held roles as a class officer and member of the leadership team at Dougherty Valley High School.

“I am excited to begin this journey as a student member of the county’s Board of Education,” Savla said. “I aim to connect with special needs students and forge more sister-school partnerships where student-led clubs and organizations bridge students across the county. I want to ensure that the voices of students are present in the conversation about educational policies and priorities.”

Both Savla and Wilson were chosen from a group of 35 applicants from eight school districts and 11 high schools. Their first meeting will be on Aug.14, at 5 pm.
Contra Costa County (CCCOE), one of California's 58 counties, ranks 11th in the state for its public-school student population, with approximately 169,225 students.
