Vineet Jagadeesan Nair has been selected as an MIT-Pillar AI Collective fellow. This enables him to conduct research in the areas of AI, machine learning, and data science to commercialize their innovations.

Nair is a PhD candidate in mechanical engineering, focusing his research on modeling power grids and designing electricity markets to integrate renewables, batteries, and electric vehicles. He is extensively interested in developing computational tools to tackle climate change, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) said in a statement.

“As a Pillar Fellow, Nair will explore the application of machine learning and data science to power systems. Specifically, he will experiment with approaches to improve the accuracy of forecasting electricity demand and supply with high spatial-temporal resolution,” the statement noted.

Nair is also working in collaboration with Project Tapestry on fusing physics-informed machine learning with conventional numerical methods to increase the speed and accuracy of high-fidelity simulations. His work could help realize future grids with high penetrations of renewables and other clean, distributed energy resources, according to the statement.

Apart from academics, Nair is active in entrepreneurship. Recently, he helped in organizing the 2023 MIT Global Startup Workshop in Greece.

Nair earned an MS degree in computational science and engineering from MIT, an MPhil in energy technologies from Cambridge University as a Gates Scholar, and a BS in mechanical engineering and a BA in economics from the University of California at Berkeley.

Launched by MIT’s School of Engineering and Pillar VC in 2022, the MIT-Pillar AI Collective supports faculty, postdocs, and students conducting research on AI, machine learning, and data science.

The program aims to advance research toward commercialization with the help of Pillar VC and the MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation.
