An Indian-origin plastic surgeon has been charged with multiple felonies following a shooting spree in Colorado Springs on Sept. 15, that left one person injured and caused significant property damage.

53-year-old Rupesh Jain, affiliated with UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central is charged with aggravated robbery, second-degree assault, criminal mischief, illegal discharge of a firearm, and reckless endangerment.

The Colorado Springs Police Department reported that the rampage began at 6:15 a.m. when a resident at the Volta at Voyager apartment complex called 911 after being shot while sleeping. Officers found Laken Duerschmidt, 25, with a gunshot wound to the forearm and discovered bullet holes and shell casings in the adjacent, vacant apartment.

According to local media, shortly after, authorities responded to shots fired at a KeyBank on Spectrum Loop, where Jain reportedly fired rounds into the building, damaging windows and an ATM. Investigators revealed that Jain had previously threatened the same bank in July 2024, though charges were not filed then.

Jain then fired shots at a Village Inn near Woodmen and Powers before attempting to enter the restaurant. Minutes later, a second KeyBank between Woodmen and Lexington was also targeted. Authorities believe the same suspect was involved in all incidents.

Police arrested Jain around 7:30 a.m. at his residence after he returned holding a key lime pie from the Village Inn. A shelter-in-place order for residents of his apartment complex was lifted following his arrest.

Jain’s court hearing, originally scheduled for Sept. 18, has been postponed as investigations continue. Reports suggest that the accused was facing mental health issues and planning to attempt suicide.
