The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced that Jayant Sabnis, senior lecturer in aeronautics and astronautics, has received the School of Engineering Distinguished Educator Award. Sabnis was one of several honorees this year at the MIT School of Engineering, which recognizes outstanding faculty, students, and staff across its departments, labs, centers, and institutes.

According to the announcement, Sabnis received the award given to a "faculty or teaching staff member whose teaching contributions are of significant impact and are consistently characterized by dedication, care, creativity, and inspiration to students and colleagues."

Sabnis has been an MIT senior lecturer since March 2016. His specialization and research interests include propulsion systems, gas turbine engines, and propulsion system-airframe integration.

“I am passionate about advancing state-of-the-art rocket and aircraft propulsions systems to meet the most demanding requirements. I am also passionate about training the next generation of propulsions system engineering leadership,” Sabnis said in his bio on the MIT website.

Prior to joining MIT, the IIT-Bombay alumnus worked at the aerospace company Pratt & Whitney. He played a lead role in defining the thermodynamic cycle for the firm’s Geared Turbofan Engine as well as securing air-framer/airline acceptance of this step change in engine architecture. He also led the team responsible for the aerodynamic design of these aircraft engines, which improved fuel consumption by over 15 per cent, while simultaneously cutting down the noise.

The environmental impact of these improvements was substantial, and TIME recognized it as “the most significant development in aviation in 2011.” Sabnis also worked as a senior principal engineer for the United Technologies Research Center, a company that advances building equipment and the aerospace industry.
