A recent report by the American Immigration Council on the contributions of immigrants in Michigan highlights the significant impact of Indian immigrants on the state's demographic and economic landscape.
According to the report, immigrants made up 6.9 percent of Michigan's population in 2022, accounting for 687,700 people. India was the top country of origin for naturalized citizens in Michigan, accounting for 9.3 percent of the total population. The report further notes that among the documented and undocumented immigrant populations in Michigan, 12 percent and 14.2 percent respectively are from India.
Indian immigrants, in particular, have emerged as key contributors to Michigan's economy. They represent 6.9 percent of immigrant entrepreneurs, underscoring their substantial role in the state's business landscape. Entrepreneur Manish Senta was profiled in the article; he emigrated to the US in 2005 to attend Purdue University for graduate studies in nanotechnology.
Manish founded the consulting and workforce management firm TekWissen and now serves as its managing director out of Ann Arbor. TekWissen employs over 800 people and generates over $142 million in U.S. revenues. The firm specializes in technology, energy, utilities, engineering, and scientific fields, providing essential services to American companies.
TekWissen helps American businesses find the skilled labor they need to remain competitive domestically. By recruiting highly skilled immigrants, refugees, and recent international graduates, it ensures that companies can meet their staffing requirements without relocating abroad. This approach not only supports local economies but also creates job opportunities for residents.
