The United States, over the past three years has deported around 48 Indian students without any specific explanation, the Indian government said. The information was disclosed by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh during a parliamentary session.
The Minister disclosed the information in response to Telugu Desam Party’s MP BK Parthasarathi’s question in the Lok Sabha inquiring about the number of students deported by the U.S. in the past three years and seeking reasons for these deportations.
“As per available information, a total of 48 Indian students have been deported from the US over the last three years. Reasons for deportation are not officially shared by the U.S. authorities,” the Minister said in his reply.
“ Unauthorized employment, unauthorized withdrawal from classes, expulsion and suspension, and failure to report Optional Practical Training (OPT) employments are some of the possible reasons which could lead to termination of a student's visa resulting in "unlawful presence" and eventual deportation,” he added.
Parthasarathi also asked whether the Indian government had data on illegal migrants abroad, particularly in the U.S., and what measures were being taken in response.
In response to that , Singh emphasized that while no specific data is available the government is actively addressing issues related to illegal migration and is educating citizens about safe and legal means of traveling abroad at both central and state levels.
