The Embassy of India in Washington on June.16 hosted its 10th International Day of Yoga celebration at the picturesque Wharf, overlooking the Potomac River in Washington DC.
The event began with Indian classical dance performances that invoked prayers for learning, setting the stage for a yoga session that highlighted the spirit of oneness and harmony inspired by the ancient Indian practice.
This year's theme, "Yoga for Self and Society”, emphasized the importance of holistic and balanced living. The program also included elements aimed at popularizing the inclusion of millets and environmentally friendly products and practices in daily life.
Deputy Indian Ambassador to USA Sripriya Ranganathan, speaking at the event, recalled that on Dec.11, 2014, the United Nations recognized the universal appeal of Yoga and designated June.21 as the International Day of Yoga.
India proposed the draft resolution, which received endorsement from a record 175 member states. She emphasized that yoga, originating in the Indus Valley Civilization, has spread globally, with millions of people practicing it for nearly 5,000 years. Ranganathan expanded on this year’s theme, emphasizing that yoga guides individuals towards harmony and balance, paving the way for a brighter future for society.
Leading up to International Yoga Day 2024, the Embassy and Consulates across the US have organized several curtain-raiser events with active participation and support from numerous community organizations and yoga enthusiasts.
