The Indian Diaspora Council (IDC) and its global affiliates extended their congratulations to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on July 7 following his decisive victory in July.4 election

Prime Minister Starmer’s Labour Party secured a commanding 410 seats in the House of Commons, ending 14 years of Conservative rule under five Tory prime ministers. The victory makes Starmer only the fourth Labour leader in the party’s 124-year history to win an election. He assumed leadership of the Labour Party in 2020, following a significant defeat in the 2019 elections where the party lost 84 seats, leading many observers to doubt Labour's future electoral prospects.

IDC lauded Starmer’s resounding victory, recognizing it as a testament to his dedication, vision, and the trust the British public has placed in his leadership. “As he steps into the role of Prime Minister, the nation looks forward to his commitment to addressing the pressing challenges and  seizing the opportunities ahead. His victory marks a new chapter for the United Kingdom, and we wish him all the best in his endeavors to lead the country towards a prosperous and united future,” the council said in a statement.

According to the IDC, a notable outcome of the recent election was the increased representation of individuals of Indian origin in the new UK Parliament, with 26 MPs. “This increased representation highlights the growing influence and contribution of the Indian diaspora to British society. It also underscores the importance of inclusivity in shaping policies that reflect the diverse fabric of the nation,” the diaspora body maintained.

Additionally, the IDC acknowledged the contributions of outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the first person of Indian origin to hold the office. Sunak’s tenure was noted for its significant challenges and his leadership served as an inspiration to many. “His historic achievement has paved the way for greater diversity and representation in British politics, reflecting the rich multicultural fabric of their nation. We appreciate his hard work, resilience, and commitment to the country, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors,” the council said.
