In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old American woman of Indian origin was found with her leg chained to a tree in a forest in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, a western state of India, on July.27.

The woman, identified as Lalita Kayi, was discovered in the village of Sonurli by a shepherd who heard her cries and promptly alerted the authorities. The police recovered several documents from the scene, including a photocopy of her U.S. passport and an Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address.

According to media reports quoting an official the woman is currently out of danger but is being treated for psychiatric issues. The police found her in a severely starved and dehydrated state in the forest and her condition was aggravated by the incessant rainfall in the area.

While she was in no condition to give an official statement, police  investigation revealed that Kayi's visa had expired and she had been residing in India for the past decade. The police believe her husband, who is reportedly from Tamil Nadu, may have tied her to the tree and fled the scene.

As part of the investigation, police teams have been dispatched to Tamil Nadu, Goa, and other locations to trace her relatives and gather more information on the case.
