Indian American lawmakers hailed President Joe Biden’s presidency as “progressive” and “consequential” after the latter announced on July 21 that he will end his presidential re-election campaign.

Praising the progress under Biden’s presidency, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal deemed him the “most progressive and effective President” in a statement posted on X.

“His leadership has been unparalleled, with a record of achievements: the lowest unemployment in over 50 years; the biggest investment in taking on climate change in history; a historic investment in rebuilding our nation's infrastructure with union and green jobs; taking on Big Pharma to reduce the cost of prescription drugs: being the most pro-union president in history and fostering the tremendous energy of workers organizing across the country,” she said.

Congressman Shri Thanedar noted that, in just one term, Biden delivered on historic infrastructure spending, made significant investments to combat climate change, passed the first piece of gun safety legislation in 30 years, lowered the cost of prescription drugs, provided critical care for veterans, and more.

The Democrat from Michigan expressed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris who will replace Biden as the Democratic nominee.

“Supporting Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States. Looking forward to Helping Kamala Harris win Michigan and defeat Donald Trump. She is a great progressive leader and someone I respect a lot,” he said in a post on X.

Congressman Ro Khanna lauded Biden for putting the country ahead of self interest and endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee. “Her trailblazing candidacy as the first African American woman and first Asian American will be a jolt of energy in our party. Our party can now run on a message of hope and a vision for the future,” in a social media post.

Referring to Biden as the “most consequential president” Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi said in a social media post, “Through his decision today, Joe Biden has demonstrated the true and selfless nature of a life committed to putting the country, and his fellow Americans, first.”

Indian American Congressman Ami Bera also lauded Biden’s contributions in a statement on X.

From passing historic investments in infrastructure to restoring American leadership on the world stage, I am proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish under his leadership.
