US Representative Ami Bera said he was left “inspired” after meeting His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in India’s Dharamshala earlier this week. Bera was part of a bipartisan Congressional delegation, led by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, to India.

Bera met Dalai Lama amid renewed discussions between Washington and Beijing following years of trade tensions between the two nations.

The Dalai Lama, who has been in exile in India since 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet, welcomed the delegation. Following the meeting, Representative Bera was honored at a felicitation ceremony hosted by the Central Tibetan Administration.

In a statement, Bera expressed his admiration for Dalai Lama’s message of compassion and forgiveness, emphasizing the importance of shared humanity. He reaffirmed the delegation’s commitment to supporting the Tibetan people in their pursuit of freedom and self-determination.

“It was a great honor to meet with His Holiness during my bipartisan Congressional delegation to India,” said Ami Bera. “I was inspired by the Dalai Lama’s message of compassion, forgiveness, and the importance of embracing our shared humanity. I am proud to stand with my colleagues in our unwavering support of the Tibetan people in their pursuit of freedom and self-determination.”

The bipartisan delegation also urged Beijing to resume negotiations without preconditions, aiming for a peaceful resolution that guarantees meaningful autonomy for Tibetans. The visit underscores ongoing international interest in the Tibetan cause amid geopolitical tensions in the region.
