Indian American Janani Krishnan- Jha among contestants on CBS show ‘Survivor ‘

The young musician will contest with 17 others in the show for the grand title of “sole survivor”

Janani Krishnan-Jha, an Indian American musician, known as J. Maya is one of 17 new candidates and one returning player in the 45th season of ‘Survivor,’ which premieres on CBS on September 27. According to CBS, they will compete for a $1 million cash prize and the title of ‘Sole Survivor.’

The 24-year-old singer and composer, took to her social media to announce the new gig. “Little life update: I got to go on an adventure I’ve been dreaming about since I was a kid!!!!! You can watch me this fall on Survivor 45,” she posted on Facebook.

A Tik Tok star, Krishnan-Jha is well-known for her conversational videos about her life as well as her favourite music and lyrics. In early 2020, she made her TikTok debut with the video "Ed Sheeran helped me make pasta today." She became one of the world's youngest pun champs.

The Indian American created a singing duet in late 2021 that went viral with over 3 million views. Her TikTok account, j.mayamusic, has 500,000 followers. Her music "Achilles Heel" gained traction in January last year, helping her achieve over 700,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

“A lot of people call my music nerd pop because I write about a lot of things I am interested in — crossword puzzles, Greek mythology, literature,” she says in the “Survivor” promotional video. “Millions of people listen to my music and it is surreal.”

Survivor presents a group of strangers in a secluded environment where they must provide their food, fire, and shelter. The players participate in activities that test their physical ability, such as running and swimming, as well as their mental abilities, such as riddles and endurance challenges, for rewards and immunity from elimination. The participants are gradually eliminated from the game as they are voted out by their peers until only one remains and is dubbed "Sole Survivor."
