Indian American Anirban Kundu  joins Instacart as chief technology officer

Kundu, who previously served as vice president and head of engineering for Uber Delivery, will officially take on his new role later this month.

Anirban Kundu, a former Uber executive, has been appointed as Instacart’s new chief technology officer, the online grocery delivery service announced on Oct.16. Kundu, an Indian American tech leader with extensive experience in building scalable platforms, will officially join Instacart later this month. He most recently served as vice president and head of engineering for Uber Delivery.

In a blog post, Instacart highlighted Kundu’s appointment as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the company’s position as a leader in grocery technology. “His deep understanding of multi-sided marketplaces like ours and proven track record of building scaled technical systems that can support long-term growth make him the perfect person to drive our technical vision forward,” the company stated.

Kundu shared his excitement about the role in a LinkedIn post, expressing his eagerness to work with the Instacart team to "transform the grocery industry." He emphasized the company’s mission to make grocery shopping more accessible and convenient through technology, noting the potential for advancements in logistical efficiency and AI-powered personalization. “I’m particularly drawn to the opportunity to lead the development of cutting-edge solutions... with a talented engineering team to scale a platform that connects millions of customers with retailers and shoppers across North America,” Kundu wrote.

Kundu’s extensive background in tech leadership includes his work at Uber, where he played a pivotal role in overseeing B2B and B2C solutions, including Uber Eats. His previous positions include serving as CTO at Evernote and leading engineering teams at Postmates, GoDaddy, and Yahoo, among others.

Instacart, which partners with over 1,500 retail banners, provides technology products and services to support both online and in-store grocery experiences, as well as e-commerce solutions, order fulfillment, and advertising capabilities.
