India won the second match in the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Australia at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday by 99 runs (DLS Method).
The victory means that India will now enter the 2023 World Cup as the top-ranked ODI squad. Having already held the top rank in Tests and T20Is, the team became the top-ranked in all formats. India is ranked first with 117 rating points, followed by Pakistan in second position with 115 rating points.
In Lucknow, India put up 399 runs making it the team's highest total against Australia in the ODI format. Indian batsmen collectively blasted 18 sixes for the enormous total. As a result, India finally became the first side in ODI cricket history to surpass the 3,000 sixes mark.
Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer put India in a commanding position after Ruturaj Gaikwad was caught behind. They scored 200 runs for the second wicket.
The Australian bowlers kept hunting for a break as Gill and Shreyas continued to build up scores. KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan grabbed control when the pair left. Rahul scored 52 runs off of 38 balls. Kishan, a left-handed player, amassed 31 runs off 18 balls as well.
India's innings got further momentum by Suryakumar Yadav as he blasted 72 runs off of just 37 balls, remaining not out.
The Australians were given a revised target of 317 runs in 33 overs when rain stopped play in the tenth over. Due to the weather delay, the needed run rate was higher than 11 when play resumed.
The Indian bowling attack led by Ravichandran Ashwin kept breaking the opponents' momentum in the second innings. While David Warner gave the Australian innings some hope by getting to a fifty, the Ashwin and Jadeja duo picked up three wickets each leaving Australia short of 99 runs.
