India, US homeland security dialogue focuses on terrorism, extremism and other issues

The dialogue concluded with the signing of a memorandum of cooperation to deepen bilateral security cooperation between the countries.

Senior officials of India and the US recently held discussions as part of the Homeland Security Dialogue (HSD), which was held in New Delhi.
 



The discussions centered on bilateral efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism, drug trafficking, and organized crime, along with ensuring transportation security.

According to the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs both sides reviewed ongoing cooperation in counter-terrorism and security domains, which have been key pillars of the India-US strategic partnership.

Ajay Bhalla, Home Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Kristie Canegallo, Acting Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security led their respective delegations.

The dialogue concluded with the signing of a memorandum of cooperation to further deepen the bilateral security partnership between the nations. The memorandum of cooperation pertains to law enforcement training between the US Federal Law Enforcement Training Centre and India’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the vibrant people-to-people ties between the two countries by taking steps to enable safe and legal migration, counter illegal migration, human trafficking, money laundering, cyber-crimes, and misuse of the cyber domain for illegal activities such as terror-financing.

They also reiterated their keen interest in consolidating the mutually beneficial collaboration between the respective law enforcement agencies through the exchange of information, capacity building, technical assistance, and regular meetings of sub-groups set up under the framework of the Homeland Security Dialogue.

The next round of the Senior Officials’ Homeland Security Dialogue will take place in Washington DC at a later date.
