The India Philanthropy Alliance (IPA), a coalition comprising 21 nonprofit and philanthropic organizations dedicated to supporting initiatives in India, has reached a significant milestone with the launch of its fifth Annual Youth Essay Competition. Originally initiated in spring 2020 shortly after IPA's public introduction, the competition aims to foster philanthropic thinking and action among middle and high school students. Engaging youth in philanthropy has been a central goal of IPA since its establishment.
According to the organising committee the essay competition serves as an impactful initial step in engaging young minds with organizations working on development and poverty alleviation in India. Participants are tasked with selecting a developmental issue they consider crucial in India and proposing actionable solutions. This year, the focus is on uncovering and amplifying lesser-known but vital issues affecting the country.
Essays will be evaluated based on their relevance, originality, depth of research, and proposed solutions. The submission deadline for essays is Jul. 1, 2024. Winning entrants will have the opportunity to speak at a national gathering of philanthropists, business leaders, and nonprofit executives. Additionally, winners will receive a USD$1,000 grant for their chosen charity, while runners-up will direct a USD$500 grant to a charity of their choice.
This announcement follows the success of IPA's recent India Giving Day campaign, which raised an impressive US$5.5 million from 1,770 donors in its second year. As part of the campaign, IPA introduced a Youth Leadership Council comprising fourteen young individuals, including past essay competition winners, who volunteered their time for fundraising, campaign promotion, and assisting participating nonprofits.
The Youth Essay Competition is sponsored by the Sarva Mangal Family Trust and Sehgal Foundation.
