In an address to the United Nations General Assembly, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, questioned the effectiveness of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in resolving the prolonged conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Expressing concern over the two-year-long conflict, Kamboj called for a reevaluation of "outdated and archaic structures" within the UN and emphasized the need for reform to enhance multilateralism's efficacy.

During the UNGA meeting on the situation in Ukraine, Kamboj echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assertion that "this is not an era of war." She raised two critical questions regarding the UN's role in resolving the conflict: "Are we anywhere near a possible acceptable solution?" and "Why is the UNSC rendered completely ineffective to the resolution of the ongoing conflict?"

Kamboj emphasized the necessity for reforming outdated structures within the UN, adding that unless addressed, these flaws would perpetuate a decline in credibility.

In her address, Kamboj stressed the importance of member states focusing on shared objectives to achieve development goals. Reiterating PM Modi's call for cooperation, she asserted that as member states work towards getting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) back on track, collaboration should be prioritized. Kamboj urged nations to keep faith in the power of dialogue and diplomacy, which she noted have consistently served humanity's progress.

India’s stance on Ukraine-Russia conflict

Addressing India's stance on the Ukraine conflict, Kamboj reiterated New Delhi’s unwavering position against the escalation of hostilities and violence, emphasizing that no solution should come at the cost of human lives.

Kamboj also stated that”the escalation of hostilities and violence is in no ones interest, we have hence urged for the outset that all efforts be made for the early cessation of hostilities and for an urgent return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy”

She assured that India's approach to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will continue to be people-centric, with a focus on providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and economic support to neighboring countries facing economic distress.

Kamboj urged caution against steps that could endanger the possibility of dialogue and negotiations. She emphasized the need for a concerted global effort to alleviate the consequences of the conflict, particularly for vulnerable societies and economies.
