India gears to launch first manned deep ocean mission
The Samudrayaan mission, India’s first manned deep ocean mission will send submersible ‘Matsya 6000’ for exploration of deep water resources like minerals.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju recently shared pictures of a submersible that is going to be launched for the exploration of deep-sea resources like minerals. Called ‘Samudrayaan mission’, it will be India’s first unique manned ocean mission, and is part of the Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) which was proposed by India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in June 2021.
The submersible named ‘Matsya 6000’ is being developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology in Chennai (NIOT), governed by the MoES. Rijiju shared three images of the submersible on his Twitter page. He also shared a video where he spoke to the developers about the workings of the submersible and its properties and got an insight into the changes that will possibly take place inside the vehicle once it reaches thousands of meters under the water.
“Our Scientists, Researchers and Engineers are fully devoted to making the Deep Ocean Mission very successful in a sustainable manner,” Rijiju wrote alongside the photos and video.
The mission was developed to support the blue economy initiatives of the government of India. Blue economy is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, and ocean ecosystem health. India was the sixth country to be equipped with the technology needed in such missions, next to the U.S., Russia, France, Japan, and China.
