India deports 3 Srilankans involved in Rajiv Gandhi assassination

They were released from prison in 2022 after serving 30 years jail time

Three Sri Lankan ex-convicts who were involved in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, left for Colombo after serving jail time in India on Apr.3.

Murugan, Robert Payas, and Jayakumar, who were among the six freed by the Indian Supreme Court in November 2022 served over 30 years in prison. According to media reports, they were held in a special camp in Tiruchirappalli after their release from jail.

An Indian citizen, Nalini, who is the wife of Murugan, along with Perarivalan Santhan, and Ravichandran were the remaining people who served their prison term. Earlier this year, Santhan died due to cardiac arrest at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai. Later, his body was taken to Colombo.

Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a suicide bombing on 21 May 1991, at Sriperumbudur, a village approximately 40 km from Chennai. He was at the  event campaigning for the Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha Congress candidate.
