India’s passport has ranked 80th on the list of the world's most powerful passports, offering visa-free travel options to 62 countries.
Publishing by Henley & Partners, the January 2024 edition of the Henley Global Mobility Report compares metrics across different regions and economic groups, including the expanded BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) bloc to determine the mobility between countries.
India witnessed a notable shift in its passport ranking this year, rising by three spots. Indian passport now grants visa-free access to 62 countries, including Bhutan, the British Virgin Islands, Thailand, and Indonesia. Indians can also obtain visas on arrival in several countries, reflecting a positive change in their mobility compared to the previous year.
Japan and Singapore maintained their lead on the list for the fifth consecutive year with their passports providing holders visa-free access to 194 countries. Other countries sharing the top spot are France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The UK also made significant progress, securing the fourth position with access to 192 destinations without a visa.
In contrast, the report identified Pakistan’s passport as one of the world's weakest, offering visa-free access to only 34 countries. Pakistan is closely followed by Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan in terms of passport weak strength.
The report's research methodology involved analysis of key indicators, such as the percentage share of global GDP and world population, along with the Henley Openness Index and Henley Passport Power Index.
