India-born lawyer receives Freedom of the City of London award

The City of London Corporation recently honored prominent legal practitioner and founder of the UK-India Legal Partnership, Ajit Mishra, with the Freedom of the City of London Award.

The India-born lawyer was awarded for his services to strengthen the business partnership between London and India, according to a LinkedIn post by the City of London Corporation.

He was nominated by Chris Hayword, policy chairman of the London Corporation, and Shravan Joshi, deputy chair of the Civil Affairs Committee. “I'm delighted to see Ajit receive the Freedom of the City of London. Ajit's contribution to the Square Mile through uniting key business stakeholders in the UK and Indian markets has been invaluable to the strengthening relationship between our two nations,” Hayword said.

Who is Ajit Mishra?

Mishra, a dual-qualified lawyer and British solicitor, has been a senior partner at several top-tier Indian and international law firms, according to his bio. He is a mergers and acquisitions specialist with a strong focus on the Indian market.

An alumnus of Delhi University and Queen Mary University of London, Mishra also serves as the special economic advisor to the City of Magdeburg (Germany) and chairman of the Indian CEO’s Forum. He also chairs the Commercial of Law Studies (CCLS) at Queen Mary University.

Former notable recipients of the award

The award dates back to the 13th century and is bestowed upon individuals who make outstanding contributions to the city of London. Heavyweights from the fields of politics, music, social service, education, sports, etc have been recognized in the past.

In politics, first Prime Minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru; former Prime Ministers of the UK Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher; first Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew; and first President of South Africa Nelson Mandela have received the award in the past.

Other recipients include thought and business leaders like Microsoft founder Bill Gates; Nobel Prize-winning mathematical physicist professor Sir Roger Penrose; singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran; Oxford project lead who spearheaded the development of the Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine Dame Sarah Gilbert; England football captain Harry Kane; and England cricketers Sajid Mahmood and Ebony Rainford-Brent.
