Imperial College London has appointed Manvinder Banga as its new chair of the council. Banga, who will take up his role on April 1, will lead the college’s governing body.
Reacting to the appointment, Banga said, “I look forward to supporting Imperial in this next phase of its journey as it seeks to leverage its excellence in research and education in science, engineering, medicine, and business to the benefit of our wider society.”
Banga previously worked at Unilever for more than three decades, during which he served as the president of global foods, home, and personal care businesses.
The IIT and IIM graduate has held numerous non-executive positions, including senior independent director at Marks and Spencer and GlaxoSmithKline. He has also served as an independent director at Thomson Reuters Corporation and Maruti Suzuki Ltd.
In addition to these roles, Banga also serves as the chair of the UK Government Investments and Marie Curie, the UK’s leading charity providing palliative care. He has founded the Kamini and Vindi Banga Family Trust with his wife intending to enhance education and cancer research.
The president of Imperial College London Hugh Brady highlighted that Banga’s experience will play a crucial role as the college is planning to launch a new strategy. “I look forward to drawing on his considerable corporate and business knowledge in the years ahead,” he said.
John Cullen, outgoing deputy chair and senior independent member of Imperial’s Council, said, “I am delighted that Imperial has such a talented and experienced council. Under Vindi’s (Manvinder) chairmanship, I look forward to helping Imperial meet its bold ambition and vision for the future.”
