The Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) and National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy) have entered into a partnership to facilitate student exchange, joint research, and establish an online engineering data science and AI degree. The partnership is to be implemented from fall 2024.
According to a statement, by Illinois Tech the partnership aims to cater to the high demand of data scientists whose annual mean salary stands at US$100,910 dollars, expecting a job growth of 36 percentage by 2031.
The partnership aligns with the Indian government’s National Education Policy (NEP), which enables global universities to provide educational opportunities based on the demands of modern-day pedagogy. Graduates of this program will be qualified to fill a variety of positions, including data scientist, machine learning engineer, data systems designer, master data analyst, and data operations manager, at companies such as Accenture, Google, Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, Apple, and many more.
Commenting on the partnership, Dr. Akhlesh Lakhtakia, chair, U.S.-India Higher Education Partnerships Committee, said, “The new partnership between Illinois Tech and NIT Trichy spans research and higher education at all levels, focusing on jointly developed curricula, joint instruction, student co-supervision, collaborative research, and faculty and student mobility.”
“The new online joint master’s degree program focused on engineering in data science and artificial intelligence for working professionals in both countries breaks new ground,” he added.
“Joining hands with Illinois Tech opens new horizons for our students and faculty. It is a significant step toward internationalizing our curriculum and research initiatives. Moreover, it will promote academic and collaborative research activities between the two institutions.” Dr. G. Aghila, director of NIT Trichy said.
