The Henry Ford Medical Group, an integrated non-profit health care organisation, has appointed Dr. Deepak Prabhakar as the new chair of psychiatry and behavioral medicine. He takes over from Dr. Cathy Frank, who led the department for over seven years.
Prabhakar previously served as chief of medical staff at Sheppard Pratt, the nation’s largest private, non-profit mental health provider. His experience at Sheppard Pratt and his previous tenure at Henry Ford Health equip him well for this new role, an official statement by the group noted.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Prabhakar back to Henry Ford,” said Dr. Steven Kalkanis, CEO of Henry Ford Medical Group. “His innovative approach to mental health care, combined with his dedication to teaching and patient advocacy, aligns perfectly with our mission and values.”
Commenting on his appointment, Prabhakar said “I am honored to lead the Department of Psychiatry at Henry Ford Health. I look forward to working with our talented team to enhance our services and provide comprehensive care to our patients. Together, we will meet the evolving needs of our community and set new standards in mental health care.”
In his new role, Prabhakar plans to introduce innovative treatment programs, expand access to mental health services, and continue the department’s excellence in education and research. He aims to expand digital health services, enhance community outreach, and foster a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, addressing the growing demand for mental health services.
Prabhakar completed his medical education at N.H.L. Municipal Medical College, Gujarat, graduating in 2005. He then pursued a residency in psychiatry at Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University from 2008 to 2011. Following his residency, he specialized further with a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the same institution, which he completed between 2011 and 2013.
