Gujarat, a state on the western coastline of India, has set the Guinness World record for performing mass Surya Namaskar, a practice in yoga.

More than 50,000 individuals participated in the event that took place simultaneously at 108 places across the state, including the iconic Modhera Sun Temple on January 1, 2024. The “remarkable feat” won the attention and acknowledgement of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media.

“As we all know, the number 108 holds a special significance in our culture. The venues also include the iconic Modhera Sun Temple, where several people joined. This is indeed a true testament to our commitment to Yoga and our cultural heritage," he wrote on X.

He further urged people to make Surya Namaskar, or Sun salutation, part of their daily routine for its benefits on the mind and body. "I also urge you all to make Surya Namaskar a part of your daily routine. The benefits are immense," Modi added.

The grand event was attended by Bhupendra Patel, the state chief minister and other key government officials. They shared praises for the participants and emphasized the importance of practicing Surya Namaskar for overall well-being. An official statement by the chief minister's office said that the ancient practice of yoga, pranayam and Surya Namaskar helps a person attain good health through exercise and connect with spirituality.

Patel expressed that the opportunity to worship and pay homage to the Sun at the Surya Temple would bring joy and enthusiasm into everyone's lives, along with new energy and warmth in the New Year. According to officials, it was India’s first-ever collective Surya Namaskar event that will set a new course for the country and the world.
