GOPIO condemns Khalistani Leader's statement
Canada's Hindu population was threatened by the Sikhs for Justice leader, who urged them to "go back to India."
The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), that aims to represent the interests of the Indian Diaspora community has reacted strongly to the viral video in which Gurpatwant Pannun, leader of the banned Sikh extremist group Sikhs for Justice(SFJ) threatened the Hindu community in Canada.
New York-based Sikh leader Pannun, in the video accused the Hindu-Canadian community of working against Canada's interests and warned them to leave the country and return to India.. His reaction came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations that Indian authorities killed Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Denouncing Pannun’s statement, GOPIO said, “It is with much distress that we have read a Statement attributed to a Khalistani leader of US based Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) asking ‘Hindus’ to leave Canada.”
The diaspora organization maintained that such statements should be avoided in an already escalating situation between two countries because Indians of all faiths have been living peacefully in various countries around the world.
“GOPIO denounces such statements and strongly believes we should refrain from making incendiary statements against one another in the current environment,”their statement read.
“We are Hindus and Sikhs and Christians and Muslim and Jains and Buddhists and Zoroastrians and of Jewish Faiths. So many of us are second, third, fourth, fifth or even sixth generation in our adapted Land!,” it added.
