Indian-origin businessman Gopichand Hinduja has clinched the title of the wealthiest individual in the United Kingdom, topping The Sunday Times Rich List. The list ranks the 1,000 wealthiest people or families in the country based on their total net worth.
Hinduja, chairman of the Hinduja Group, saw his net worth rise to approximately US$47.3 billion (£37.196 billion), marking a significant increase from the previous year's US$44.42 billion (£35 billion).
The Hinduja family has secured the top spot on the list for six consecutive years. Other notable Indian figures on the list include Lakshmi Mittal, executive chairman of ArcelorMittal, who holds an estimated wealth of US$31.73 billion ((£14.921 billion)
Behind Hinduja, Leonard Blavatnik and David and Simon Reuben and family occupy prominent positions on the list, with respective net worths of US$37.09 billion (£29.24 billion) and US$31.69 billion (£24.97 billion).
Gopichand, who was born in India, has shown remarkable business acumen and vision by playing a key role in growing the Hinduja Group into a multinational behemoth. The group is present in eleven sectors including automotive, oil and specialty chemicals, banking and finance, IT and ITeS, cyber security, healthcare, trading, infrastructure project development, media and entertainment, power, and real estate.
The recent passing of his brother, Srichand Hinduja, propelled Gopichand into the chairman's seat, signifying a new chapter in the family's storied legacy. However, the transition has not been devoid of challenges, as a familial dispute over business ownership surfaced in the wake of Srichand's demise.
Despite these internal dynamics, the Hinduja Group continues to thrive across diverse sectors. As of 2023, the net worth of the group is US$20 billion.
