Former Principal Deputy Solicitor General of the United States, Neal Katyal has been named among Forbes' America’s Top 200 Lawyers for 2024.
The publication recognises Katyal’s 29 years of litigation experience demonstrated by his involvement in 50 cases argued before the U.S. Supreme Court. It also acknowledged his significant victories, including defending the constitutionality of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and winning a crucial voting rights-related case in 2023 concerning North Carolina's gerrymandering.
Katyal’s recognition highlights his exceptional legal skills, particularly in constitutional law and litigation. At 52, the Indian American has surpassed the record for most Supreme Court cases argued by any minority attorney, breaking Thurgood Marshall’s record.
In December 2017, American Lawyer magazine named him The Litigator of the Year. With 48 cases argued before the Supreme Court and two more scheduled for March and April of this year, Katyal's legal experience spans various areas including constitutional, technology, corporate, patent, securities, criminal, employment, and tribal law.
Before joining as a partner at Hogan Lovells, Katyal served as Acting Solicitor General of the United States, handling major Supreme Court cases such as defending the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and representing former Attorney General John Ashcroft. Katyal's accolades include his role as the Special Prosecutor for the State of Minnesota in the George Floyd murder case and winning the prestigious Edmund Randolph Award from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Apart from his legal career, Katyal has appeared on television shows and won awards for his pro bono work. He currently serves as a Trustee of Dartmouth College and the Whitney Museum in New York City.
