Boomitra, a pioneering agricultural technology firm, founded by Indian-American Aadith Moorthy, has been named to TIME’s 100 Companies list for 2024. The annual list highlights influential businesses shaping the future of their industries.
Boomitra’s innovative approach to carbon sequestration and its impact on small farmers in the Global South has earned it recognition on the disrupters section of the list.
The firm name, derived from Sanskrit and meaning “friend of the earth,” reflects its mission to support sustainable farming practices. It aims to bridge the gap between the agricultural sector and companies seeking to offset their carbon emissions.
Upon receiving the recognition, CEO Aadith Moorthy said “We are deeply honored and grateful to be recognized by TIME as one of the 100 Most Influential Companies. This acknowledgment underscores the impact of our collective efforts and inspires us to continue driving meaningful change.”
It helps farmers adopt techniques such as minimal tillage and the use of cover crops, which enhance soil quality and trap carbon dioxide, thereby increasing crop yields and mitigating climate change.
Boomitra’s distinctive approach leverages satellites and AI-backed technology to measure carbon levels in the soil and verify carbon credits for sale on the open market. This method eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming soil sampling, ensuring that more revenue from carbon credits goes directly to farmers.
As of April 2024, Boomitra has facilitated the removal of 10 million metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere through the efforts of 150,000 farmers.
“Smallholder farmers in the Global South are disproportionately impacted by climate change,” CEO Moorthy said. “Effective climate action requires prioritizing those most profoundly affected—communities in the Global South. That’s what makes Boomitra a leader in climate action. It’s not just about technological innovation; it’s about fostering climate solutions that resonate with the heartbeat of our global community.”
For successfully removing 10 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere to date, Boomitra recently bagged the prestigious Earthshot Prize in the “Fix Our Climate” category. The firm plans to distribute $200 million in carbon finance to tens of thousands of marginalized farmers by 2025.
