Film that explores retired immigrant life to premiere at Teaneck Film Festival 2024

The film, which runs for 85 minutes, is a romantic comedy-drama that explores the emotional complexities immigrants face as they reach retirement in the United States.

Emmy-nominated filmmaker Tirlok Malik’s latest film On Golden Years will be screened at the prestigious Teaneck International Film Festival 2024 on Nov.10, at 11:30 AM at Teaneck Cinemas in New Jersey. 

The film, which runs for 85 minutes, is a romantic comedy-drama that explores the emotional complexities immigrants face as they reach retirement in the United States.

Malik, renowned for his focus on the immigrant experience in films such as Lonely in America, Khushiyaan, and Love Lust and Marriage, presents On Golden Years as a reflection on aging, identity, and the quest to reconcile dreams with reality. Set in Shantiniketan, the only Indian retirement community in the U.S., the film delves into the question of belonging in one’s later years.

The cast features well-known actors, including Ranjit Chowdhry, Jyoti Singh, Reeves Lehmann, and Tirlok Malik himself. The film also introduces new talents, adding fresh energy to the narrative. Co-produced and co-directed by Iggy Ignatius, who also founded the Shantiniketan community in Florida where the film was shot, On Golden Years highlights the significance of family, community, and finding a sense of home.

The film includes a special musical performance by Grammy Award-winning singer Falu, who makes her film debut with the song "Raba Raba." Falu, recognized for her performances at venues such as Carnegie Hall and The White House.

Commenting on the film’s central theme, Malik said, "The immigrant experience is often accompanied by dreams, struggles, and sacrifices, but the journey to the American Dream doesn’t end after reaching success. Retirement brings its own set of challenges, especially for immigrants trying to find where they belong."

Following the screening, Malik and the cast will participate in a Q&A session with the audience. The event is sponsored by David Nachman, Esq., Managing Attorney at Nachman, Phulwani, Zimovcak (NPZ) Law Group, which specializes in immigration law.
