Gorakhpur recently witnessed a vibrant celebration of Chhath Puja, an ancient festival honoring Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya, the goddess of purity, strength, and fertility. Thousands of devotees, both local and international, gathered along the Rapti River’s ghats to take part in this four-day ritual. Notably, this year saw a significant influx of Indian Americans NRIs, many from Purvanchal origins, who returned to reconnect with their cultural roots and experience the tradition in its birthplace.

For many of these NRIs, who had heard of Chhath Puja through family stories, this was a deeply emotional journey. City administration team expressed pride in the extensive preparations that allowed for such a significant reunion, calling it a moment to bridge generations and reinforce cultural bonds.

The ghats were beautifully adorned with diyas (earthen lamps), and devotees offered fruits, sugarcane, and wheat in bamboo baskets. Traditional Chhath songs filled the air, creating an atmosphere of purity, unity, and reverence. Devotees, standing knee-deep in the river, folded their hands in prayer, embodying a tradition passed down over centuries.

Chhath Puja is more than a festival it’s a cultural legacy for people from Purvanchal and Bihar mostly which is now seen as a global celebration with devotees celebrating across the border too. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Gorakhpur administration, led by the Nagar Nigam, went to great lengths to enhance the experience. From clearing the ghats to installing lights and setting up medical and restroom facilities, the city ensured that all participants, especially the elderly, were safe and comfortable.

The festival was live-streamed globally, allowing those who couldn’t attend in person to participate virtually. Such initiatives reflect the vision of transforming Gorakhpur into an international pilgrimage destination for Chhath Puja and other festivals, which aligns with the Chief Minister's goals to honor the spiritual and cultural importance of the region.

As the festival ended with the morning Arghya, Gorakhpur returned to a calm state, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated. The city displayed its open-hearted nature, bridging time and distance through tradition creating an inclusive environment that celebrates heritage and fosters a sense of global community.

Many NRIs, like California resident Sonakshi Modanwal, were moved by the experience. "Standing in the river offering Arghya, I feel deeply connected to my roots and my ancestors," she shared. Another devotee, Rashi Jain Agrahari, who came from Germany, expressed pride in teaching these customs to her children, ensuring that this legacy lives on in future generations.

The influx of overseas participants added a unique cultural exchange to the festival, with local families inviting friends from abroad to join in the rituals. This genuine display of unity, shared curiosity, and mutual respect underscored the festival's timeless appeal for all of them together.
