Indo-Canadian immunology and paediatrics specialist Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill finds herself entangled in a legal battle arising from her Covid-related social media posts. Grappling with a daunting CA$300,000 in legal fees, she has garnered support from an undisclosed entity, pledged to cover her expenses.
In the midst of the 2020 global pandemic, Dr. Gill, an Indian-origin physician based in Canada, voiced opposition against government-enforced lockdowns and vaccination mandates. However, her stance encountered legal action from medical organizations and censorship from a social media platform, referred to here as "X".

According to a statement released, “Dr. Gill faced harassment from mainstream media and censorship from the prior management of the social media platform, now known as "X," due to her outspoken views against Covid-related government policies. Moreover, she underwent investigations and disciplinary proceedings by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, leading to the placement of "cautions" on her permanent public record.”
Dr. Gill's social media posts drew heavy criticism from the medical community and mainstream media outlets. In response, she initiated legal action against 23 individuals, including doctors, journalists, and news organizations, accusing them of participating in a defamation campaign against her.
However, a judge dismissed Dr. Gill's lawsuit, citing anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) legislation. The judge determined that Dr. Gill's objective was to suppress her critics' freedom of expression on a public platform. Consequently, Dr. Gill was instructed to cover the defendants' legal costs.
