Duke appoints Manoj Mohanan interim dean of its  Sanford School

Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy has announced Manoj Mohanan as its interim dean. Mohanan who took office on July 1 will serve a two-year term, bringing extensive expertise in health and development economics to the role, the university saidin a statement.

Since joining the Sanford School faculty in 2011, Mohanan has specialized in health and development economics. Currently the Creed C. Black Professor of Public Policy,  his research spans various topics, including performance-based contracts, healthcare provider quality, health insurance, and social accountability in public service delivery. He also investigates how subjective expectations and beliefs influence healthcare behavior.

Mohanan’s work has been supported by grants from prestigious organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the World Bank. His projects often involve field experiments and large-scale policy evaluations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led and co-led two of the first seroprevalence studies in India, providing critical early data on the virus's spread.

Additionally, Mohanan has spearheaded initiatives to enhance student experiences and interdisciplinary learning, including co-leading the Undergraduate Task Force and developing an immersive program connecting students with U.S. policymakers in Washington, D.C.

Reflecting on his new role, Mohanan said, ““I'm stepping into this role for a couple of years. It gives me the opportunity to provide the school and my colleagues with stability and continuity as we proceed, but also an opportunity to hopefully make a difference and support my colleagues.”

In 2022, Mohanan was recognized as one of Apolitical’s Top 100 most influential academics in government. He holds a Ph.D. in Health Policy (Economics), as well as an MS and MPH from Harvard University. Before his academic pursuits, he was selected to become an air force pilot in India.
